Welcome to the SOCK(topus)CLUB blog!

This is a forum for all Club Members to share progress, tips, exchange ideas, and encourage fellow members to defeat the dreaded Single Sock Syndrome! It is also the place where I will update you on when parcels are being sent out, if extra Club yarn will be available at the shop, extra bits, prizes, etc.

Participation is not mandatory but I believe you'll get the most from the Club and have lots of fun if you do.  PLEASE MAKE SURE you check the Important Info section to the right from time to time as that is where announcements and important things to know will be posted.

Also be sure to read the (very short) BLOG RULES on the right to help us all enjoy the best of this blog and each other.

Your invitation to participate in this blog confirms your membership in 2009's Club. I'm sending out invitations this week and next. If you don't receive an invitation by the end of next week, please get in touch.

Tinna's Meme

Hi all~ I'm Cornchowder from Ravelry... I'm sooo excited for this sock club~~ This is my "1st real sock club" (you know with the bells and whistles~)

Yarn: I'm a big fan of anything Malabrigo... I hate to limit myself here... because just the mention of yarn... will make my head turn~

Cast on: I've just recently learned the Long Tail Tubular cast-on... and I've been using it for everything~~

Cast off: I need to learn some new-clever-er cast offs~ I'm very limited here~

Patterns: I like ones that assume nothing~ and give exact directions... As much as I admire EZ~ I've yet to successfully knit one of her math-involved patterns~

Colours: I love all colors~~ but I tend to stay away from earth tones- do I like them visually... I don't like to knit with them~

Book: current fave: the Twilight series (oh yes~)... and I recently read falling leaves by Adeline Yeh and I cried every other page~~

TV Show/Movie: Numb3rs, House M.D., Bones, Jon and kate +8, and... Sponge Bob Square pants (I have nephew~ if you can't beat em~ join em?)

Knitting trick: err~ I didn't know such things existed!! teach me!!

Make me Smile Moment: the expressions on my newphews faces after tasting their own- homemade soda (errr after I only let them use 1/2 the sugar the instructions told them to~ it was ALOT of sugar...I couldn't justify letting them put in 1/2 a cup of sugar into a tiny test tubey thing!)DSC04821

Treat: Dark chocolate (75%)... Coffee...wine....cheese... cookies... cake... oh my...I could go on~

Joy's Meme

For reasons known only to myself, I blog as Aknita, and post on Ravelry as Thimblina. Everyone just calls me Joy - which is fine, because that's who I am ;-)

Yarn: It's not so much about the type of yarn with me - it's colour. Sometimes a colour combination takes me totally by surprise, colours I wouldn't normally go for can be transformed when combined with other shades. I am a complete and total pushover where sock yarn is concerned. If pressed to name a favourite, I would say Dream in Colour Smooshy or anything by Knitwitches.

Cast on: In spite of Lucy Neatby's best efforts I am still struggling with that pesky crochet cast on! I am dyspraxic, and find the co-ordination involved very difficult. I'm determined to master it though.

Cast off: The usual way unless told otherwise.

Patterns: Well, I have knitted in excess of 20 Forest Canopy Shoulder Shawls - I seem to like that one!

Colours: I am not a fan particularly of oranges or yellows - but see Yarn above!

Book: I have read The Lord of the Rings every year since I was 10! I have worn out two copies. I love to read anything that is well written though, I don't have a particular favourite genre.

TV Show/Movie: I love Dr Who. I also really enjoyed this last series of Spooks. As for films - I love the old black and whites, Goodbye Mr Chips and Now Voyager are particular favourites.

Knitting trick: I don't have one really - apart from to enjoy what you are knitting.

Make me Smile Moment: Standing on the scales and seeing another lb disappear - it doesn't happen very often though ;-)

Treat: Good cheese with a glass of port - heaven. Or a G&T.

Sally's Meme

Hi & Happy New Year from Sally (HeyYeah on Ravelry)

Here are my answers:

1) Yarn: I love all kinds of different yarns but one I adore is Pagewood Farm Alyeska because it's so soft and such pretty colours.
2) Cast on: As quickly as possible
3) Cast off: I love the Lucy Neatby way with the X (but I don't know what it's called)
4) Patterns: There are so many lovely patterns at the moment. I think we are all incredibly lucky. I'll go with the Apres Surf jumper (which I have been knitting for about 8 months). Also every time I see the February Ladies sweater I want one! Plus just about everything on The Twist Collective and Nora G.
5) Colours: I like all sorts of colours but especially blues & oranges.
6) Book: Keeping on a knitting theme I'll go for 'Knitting from the Top Down' by Barbara Walker which has made me laugh (at the knitted trousers) and cry (when trying to do the maths for a knitted-on sleeve).
7) TV Show/Movie: the last season of Lost was fabulous plus Battlestar Galactica, House, Flight of the Concords etc
8) Knitting trick: Short rows for bust darts
9) Make me smile moment: When my cat rolls over and accidentally falls off the bed (I promise that no cats are harmed for my amusement)
10) Treat: Quilting - I love it but it's so hard to find the time.

Kathryn here...

(I'm katq on ravelry, and as the sock club was a suprise present from my boyfriend I'm also technically Tom!)

This is my first sock club and I've actually only ever knit one pair of socks (so hoping the first couple of patterns aren't too challenging!) but I have a growing collection of sock yarn and sock books.

1) Yarn: I love sock yarn (even though I haven't yet knit a lot of socks...) I like malabrigo a lot and a big fan of any alpaca yarns, but love the colours of Dream in Colour...there are way too many to choose a favourite.
2) Cast on: Tubular or long tail.
3) Cast off: EZ sewn bind off, but I don't know that many to choose from yet.
4) Patterns: Ysolda, I love Vivian at the moment
5) Colours: Not found a colour I don't like...I especially like a nice grey though.
6) Book: Don't really have much time to read other than for uni.
7) TV Show/Movie: Grey's Anatomy/Darjeeling Limited
8) Knitting trick: I haven't really been knitting long enough to have knitting tricks yet.
9) Make me smile moment: Sunday morning breakfasts.
10) Treat: Cucumber, honestly, I'm addicted.

Club Houses

Edited 19/12/08
Love the entries so far! 6 days till contest closes so do keep your suggestions coming.

As this year we are 100 members, to keep the club nice and cozy and help make it easier to get to know each other, I am dividing Members into 4 Club Houses. Some of the Club games will be inter-House (eg most finished socks per House), and I am thinking possibly some intra House too to foster some healthy team spirit and competitive drive!

So here's our first little contest. I am looking for suggestions for names of the 4 Club Houses. Please enter your suggestions in the comments of this post. Winning names will receive a prize of, oh, i don't know... how about yarn? ;)

Contest closes at midnight Christmas Eve.

Happy naming!
